Early Schooling

Elementary and middle school made me love school and everything about it.From the day I started kindergarten at Leicester Primary School, I felt at home. Throughout almost all of elementary and middle school, I had a fantastic group of teachers who I know wanted the best for me and inspired me to do my best. Even through a move to another town, my fabulous teachers helped me to succeed and adjust. These teachers helped me to become the driven individual that I am today.

Mrs. Fitzgerald was my kindergarten teacher. Though everyone loves his or her kindergarten teacher, I can honestly say Mrs. Fitzgerald was one of the sweetest women I have ever met. She bred a love of school in me that I could not shake for my entire educational career. She knew that kindergarten was a difficult adjustment for all of us, but from story time to snack time to nap time, it was obvious that she cared so much about each and every one of us. Like a mom away from home, she was nurturing and kind but also managed to teach us at the same time. To this day, I still remember the silly songs that she would sing to us to help us remember all of the things we needed to learn. We did so many awesome things that the year seemed like it lasted forever. I could not wait to go to school every day and to see what fun activities she had in store for us.

The next few years went by in a blur. Though I had some good teachers and good memories, the next year that really stood out was fifth grade with Mrs. Lahti. Mrs. Lahti was such a memorable teacher because she not only taught me what I needed to know, but made sure she challenged me as well. She could tell when I was getting bored with the normal classroom lesson and come up with a way for it to be more challenging for me. As the class learned about potential and kinetic energy, she assigned a special project to my friend Katie and me. We built a roller coaster out of the building toy K’nex and had to explain to the class where all of the energy was used. In this way, she enriched us and I got a better understanding of what we were learning. These enrichment activities continued for the entire year. She also got to know all of her students on a more personal level, and made sure to talk to us about our interests outside of school. When Katie and I took ski lessons during the winter of fifth grade, Mrs. Lahti asked us about our lessons weekly and even came to the mountain during our last lesson to watch us ski. To this day, I keep in touch with her because she made such an impact on my academic life. Fifth grade was one of my favorite years of school because of her phenomenal teaching ability.

After fifth grade, my whole world turned upside down when my family decided to move. I started sixth grade at Douglas Intermediate Elementary School, in the district where my mom taught. Leaving my friends and everything that I had ever known was very difficult. I had to start all over again at my new school which was a tough transition. Luckily, it did not take too long for me to adjust to my new life in Douglas.

This transition was made easier by Ms. Collins, my geography teacher. Knowing I was a new student, she immediately took me under her wing. She helped me with my locker and finding my classes when I first got there because it was obvious that I was very lost. Then, as I adjusted, she made sure she pushed me so I remained as driven as I was when I left Leicester. Though I did not like geography, I did like her class, where we learned time management and how to be good students along with all of the countries of the world. At the end of the year, she nominated me for a leadership conference in Washington, D.C. Her faith in me to be a leader at the school that I just started attending meant so much to me. This faith helped me to become a leader. Without her, my adjustment to life in Douglas would have been much more difficult.

Middle school and elementary school made me love education. My teachers pushed me and supported me to become the best person and best student I could be. Even with a move in the middle of my education, I continued to thrive because of the support of my teachers. Without these fantastic and dedicated people in my life, I would not want to be a teacher like them today.
